Comments on the News:

  • “As a company on the cutting edge of e-learning, we wanted a similarly innovative technology to support our solution,” said Emmie Chang, CEO, Wonder-Space Mobile. “Model Metrics and salesforce.com are enabling us to better serve our students’ needs with a new cloud computing app that has built-in flexibility to serve our students’ needs and to scale with our growth.”
  • “Wonder-Space Mobile’s use of the Force.com platform to deliver education services to students over mobile devices is yet another example of the mobility trend of Cloud 2 and the necessity for all cloud solutions to incorporate real-time, mobile and social,” said Kendall Collins, chief marketing officer, salesforce.com.
  • “The range of content being delivered via mobile devices continues to grow, with education as no exception,” said Adam Caplan, CEO, Model Metrics. “We’re glad to have partnered with Wonder-Space Mobile to develop this innovative cloud-based solution to support their revolutionary educational program.”

Mobilizing E-Learning in the Clouds

A spin-off of Wonder-Space, which provides supplemental education, academic, and e-learning services to school districts and K-12 students, WSM provides eligible students with tutoring via mobile phone or one-on-one tutoring. Mobile phones are used as a teaching tool, which students use to contact their tutor 24/7 providing for flexibility in scheduling and delivery of services.

WSM had outgrown its existing system for automated delivery of student course work and needed a more robust solution to better serve the diverse educational needs of its students and take the company to its next level of growth. In an effort to minimize IT infrastructure investments and build a system with considerable scalability, WSM selected Force.com to serve as the foundation for the delivery of its m-learning programs and Angel.com for its IVR system. Model Metrics was brought in to customize and implement the cloud-based system for student needs.

The resulting solution delivers student course work via a mobile phone/IVR with Force.com serving as the course distribution and tracking system.

  • Using a custom application that Model Metrics built using Force.com, WSM has the ability to build custom courses and place students into different courses based on their performance. For instance, if a student is doing well, the system has the ability to recognize the skill level and give him or her a more difficult lesson. On the contrary, the system also has the ability to recognize a student who is struggling and give them an alternative course load along with a tutoring session.
  • The system also uses the Force.com platform to integrate with Angel.com's Virtual Call Center (VCC) that allows students to connect directly to a live tutor – on demand if necessary – and for seamless student course delivery, registration and testing. For example, a student uses his or her WSM-issued mobile phone to call into the VCC. The system automatically registers the student and provides the VCC with the course work, keeping track of answers and grading the student’s work along the way.
